The first year is devoted to a rigorous study of the principles.
Students take at least three out of four core courses with a minimum of 54 credits. Core
courses are designed to impart the prerequisite background for a successful
dissertation in the program. Typically, you will either follow the economics
track, taking microeconomics, macroeconomics and quantitative methods, or
the management track, focussing on microeconomics, management science and
quantitative methods.
We expect students to pass three core courses with an average of good or better in order to continue with the program. Only in this case we guarantee supervision during the research stage. In the second year students begin to work on their first research paper. In parallel, they take courses to broaden and deepen their knowledge in specific areas of interest. Some second year courses provide an advanced introduction into a particular field, others focus on selected research topics and lead to the frontiers of research.

If your highest degree is a bachelor's degree you have to take additional
courses to fulfill the requirements for a master's degree from one of Berlin's
universities (for those with a master's or diploma degree it is optional).
Currently, this is most conveniently done for the
Master's in Economics &
Management Science, MEMS at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, in which
the doctoral program is accepted as an "honor track".
During the research phase students devote their time primarily to their own research and the writing of research papers, which culminate in the dissertation. They participate in seminars according to their interests. In some seminars invited speakers get you in touch with leading research in the respective field. Other provide you with a framework for the discussion of your own research. Duration: We expect students, who already have a master's degree in economics or business, to finish their doctoral thesis about three to four years after entering. Those entering with a bachelor degree will need four to five years.
